FAA Requirements for Commercial Pilot License

Hold a private pilot, sport pilot certificate, or recreational pilot license.

You must log a minimum of 250 hours of flight time as a pilot. Which must include at least:
  • 100 hours in powered aircraft including:
    • 50 hrs. in airplanes
  • 100 hours of pilot in command flight time including at least:
    • 50 hrs. in airplanes
    • 50 hrs. in cross-country flight including at least:
      • 10 hours in airplanes
    • 20  hours of  flight training including at least:
      • 10 hrs. of instrument training using a view-limiting device.
        • 5 hours must be in a single-engine airplane
      • 10 hrs. of training in an airplane that has retractable landing gear, flaps, and a controllable pitch propellor, or is turbine powered
      • One 2 hr. daytime cross country flight in a single-engine airplane
        • total straight-line distance of more than 100 nautical  miles
      • One 2 hr. nighttime cross country flight in a single-engine airplane
        • total straight-line distance of more than 100 nautical  miles
      • 3 hrs. of instruction with an authorized instructor in a single-engine airplane within 60 days prior to your practical test
    • 10 hours of solo flight or 10 hours of flight time performing the duties of pilot in command in a single-engine airplane with an authorized instructor on board that include:
      • One cross-country flight of at least 300 nautical miles
        • Landings at a minimum of 3 points
          • One of which is a straight-line distance of at least 250 nautical miles
      • 5 hours night VFR conditions
        • 10 takeoffs and 10 landings involving flight in a traffic pattern at an airport
